Old Blades Regatta 2016

An excellent old boys event at Eton Dorney lake this year with 7 x 8’s entered including 4 boats from Eton College, Hampton, Reading Blue Coat and Shiplake College.

This will be an annual event with Radley and Canford interested in joining next year. The date is the 3rd Saturday of September.

This years event included distances over 1000m, 500m and 250m with Eton winning overall. A great effort to those involved!

17-18 September 2016 Approved

Further to conversations with Henley Council, HRR and British Rowing we are planning for 17-18 September 2016.

We’re in full steam ahead with 10 x teams submitted including Schools, Universities and Clubs with a particular interesting type of boat from the Clevedon Pilot Gig club. The Cornish Pilot Gig boats have been around since the 1800’s and will be a great sight at Henley Revival.

Planning Update

We have had a good first week of planning, with the following updates:

Jeff Elms, British Rowing – Contacted HRR, Women’s Henley and National Rowing who are keen on the idea. James Lee from Thames Region will be in contact.

Daniel Grist, HRR – General interest and suggested speaking to British Rowing (see above).

Mike Kennedy, Henley Council – In terms of promoting Henley and generating further visitor attractions, great idea.

David Currie, Shiplake College Head of Rowing – Interested in the idea and passed to Alumni  for consideration.

Other:

We need Schools and Universities interested to advise us.

Looking for Schools, Universities, Boat Clubs etc who have wooden eights and fours that we could use.

Overview

Henley Revival is an idea that we are exploring with Henley Council, HRR, British Rowing and the Henley Rowing Museum.

The event proposed would differentiate itself from HRR and Henley Masters by following a vintage theme.

Competitors would be using wooden boats, non-cleaver blades, no lycra (sorry guys) and certainly no carbon fibre.

The event is aimed at those ex-competitors who once rowed at Henley in School or University teams but are no longer at club level.

In addition we are looking into some fun events for the family, such as fastest family in a wooden tub boat over 100 metres, best 500m ergo time in chinos and a blazer – you get the idea.

We are looking for sponsors, local Henley food and drink companies along with any events coordinators who are interested in a challenge!
